Here’s the Drop:
A sequel to Top Gun has, for the last year or so, been one of those improbable, decades-later sequels that was actually on track to happen in the near. Paramount Pictures and the principal players behind the 1986 action sensation were all duly psyched about returning Maverick and Iceman to the skies to continue their intensely homoerotic rivalry in an age drone warfare. While a 3D re-release of the original Top Gun is still looking likely for early next year, Top Gun 2 is no longer a possibility, it seems.
Though it seemed like the sort of sequel that would remain a pipe dream for fans, more than a year ago, Paramount hired X-Men: First Class and Thor contributors Zack Stentz and Ashley Miller to write the script. When the duo didn’t get their version off the ground, so to speak, the studio called on Peter Craig, who co-wrote The Town with Ben Affleck.
It seemed that the world would actually end up getting another jingoistic actioner following Maverick in his swaggering adventures, but the death of Tony Scott means that the sequel has been abandoned, according to the New York Times. Scott committed suicide in August, and without the director, Top Gun 2 is simply not a possibility. Just days before his death, Scott was apparently accompanied by Cruise on location scouts for the sequel, indicating just how far along the sequel was in development.
It seems Tom Cruise no longer has the NEED for SPEED!
